RARE ANTIQUE ARTIFICIAL HORIZON BY WHYTE THOMSON, GLASGOW
Copyright 2006 by Land And Sea Collection, All Rights Reserved
Presented is a
most unusual artificial horizon that is based on the pendulum principal. It dates from the last decade
of the 1800's. It was made by Whyte Thomson & Co., 96 Hope Street, Glasgow, Scotland, and is based on Murray's patent
There is an exact example of this device on page 108, figure 118, in Peter
Ifland's definitive book on navigation instruments, "Taking the Stars". Copyright, The Mariner's Museum, Newport News, VA,
1998; Krieger Publishing Co.
The device is to be used with an instrument that measures the altitude of a heavenly
body, sun, star or planet. Pendulum artificial horizons date back to about the 1780's. The designs were based on the idea that a sight vane attached to a freely swinging pendulum would provide
a horizontal reference line and form a horizon. In the Murray design, a weight at the fulcrum, acts as a counter balance.
It is shown mounted on an antique Tulip frame sextant with ivory inserts that is not included in this offering.
