AUTHENTIC BUILDER'S TANK TEST MODEL
Presented is the original builder's Tank
Test model of a custom yacht named Calypso that was designed and built
in 1965 for a yachtsman for ocean cruising. Models such as this are very rare in the market place, and are very expensive
to build. This one with her pronounced shearline, graceful flared bow and curved transom is a magnificent work of design,
and model maker's craftsmanship. The aged patina of her varnish is particularly appealing, and the designer's notations penned inside
the hull add a touch authenticity.
PROVENANCE: We were able to trace back Model
No 3110's history to the Stevens Institute of Technology's, Davidson Laboratory where it was tested
for Daniel.J.W. McCarthy, president of Marine Design Associates, West Palm Beach, FL in 1965. It is a 1/16th scale
model and was tested as shown in our photo without appendages, except for the skeg and spray rail which ran from the
bow to station 5. The picture directly below shows a forward section that was modified to accept some additional test
equipment. The real vessel's Length Overall was 72 ft and the displacement was 74,000 lbs. It was tested in calm
water and waves at speeds up to 30 knots.
Dan McCarthy had a long career as a draftsman, naval architect and
designer of all types of vessels, including those for the U.S. Navy and the famous Garlington sports fisherman's. His
career started in 1954 and ended with his death in 2003. This vessel is one of the most beautiful offshore cruisers of contemporary
