FAMOUS N. STARR
M1812 - M1818
CAVALRY SABER

Presented is one of the famous N. Starr Calvary sabers
made to the 1812 design of the William Rose contract which included scabbards. The Rose contract was modified on January
11, 1813. The principal difference of this modification is the greater curve of the blade, the large angle of the
hilt, and the increased distance between the knuckle bow and the grip. These swords were primarily inspected by Henry
H. Perkins, but also by Luther Sage and Oliver Allen.
This example with bird's head pommel, has a sharply curved 32 inch blade with clipped point. It is 1 3/8 inches wide at the hilt, and 37 inches overall. A 1/2 inch fuller runs
26 inches long. The marking on the ricasso are, even and distinct on four lines. US / P/
LS (Luther Sage) / N. Starr. There is no scabbard. The wood grip was originally
covered in leather. The blade has an extremely sharp fighting edge.
CONDITION: The blade is very good to near excellent, but shows
its age with small pitting and various shades of Grey from light to dark. The iron P-guard has a slot for a
strap. The wooden grip was originally leather covered, and painted black at one time. There are a few small chips
of wood missing at the rear of the handle, and the ferrule is slightly loose. The iron hilt has some minor pitting. There
is no scabbard. The blade carries a very sharp edge fighting edge.
The variations of this design are discussed
and pictured in the "American Sword, 1775-1945" by Harold L. Peterson
BRIEF HISTORY: Nathan Starr of Middletown, Connecticut
began his sword business in 1798 by making cavalry sabers for enlisted men. He produced 2,000 swords marking them with "N.
Starr & Co." on one side of the blade and "US - 1799" on the other. He and his son Nathan, Jr., made swords,
sabers and cutlasses for the United States until 1818 and were the leading maker until 1830 until 1830 when the Ames
Manufacturing Company of Chicopee, Mass started business. The three accounted for most of the swords produced in this
country for many years. Ames continues in business today in a much reduced fashion.
This is a fine example of an early N. Starr
Cavalry Saber
