CANADIAN ISSUE FAIRBAIRN SYKES 3rd PATTERN FIGHTING KNIFE Ca 1960 Presented is an example made for Canadian Forces in the form of one of the most famous fighting knives in the world. It is complete with its original scabbard. Both date Ca 1960 or later. The Fairbairn Sykes design's story is well told and there are numerous variations and copies of this WWII hand-to-hand combat veteran so we will stick to the basics for the original Third Pattern which this knife replicates. It was introduced in October, 1943 in an effort to boost war production. Its major distinction was its 27 ring hilt made from a zinc and aluminum alloy, the design of which was attributed to Joseph Rodgers. Three companies, with Wilkinson Sword the lead contractor, were known to be the original makers with more following. Some of the original knives had maker's marks on the ricasso and others did not. Wilkinson Sword was known to have marked 1st Pattern and 2nd, but not all of 3rd Pattern with their logo. The F-S Fighting Knife was marked with their logo. William Rodgers, founded in 1830 and since 1983 part of Egginton Bros., Ltd., is the only company of the original group with a contract from the British Ministry of Defense and NATO to make an updated version of this knife today, but it is made without military markings. These versions are referred to as, "sterile". READER'S PLEASE NOTE: Some questions arose as to the authenticity of this knife so we wrote to a noted authority in England who is recognized as being expert in this special field. The questions that were addressed were the propriety of the Canadian issue "C" cartouche, the pommel nut, a lack of proper mold marks, and the narrow cross guard. The authority whose knowledge I accept says the knife is of post war manufacture and that the Canadian issue stamps look to be official, but that he can not guarantee them to be authentic. He also says the knife may be official issue, but the double stamping is odd and has obviously been applied over the original hilt finish, hence the chipped paint. I suggested it is also possible the paint was removed by a former owner so the stamping could be seen more clearly. Note that in one picture the black paint is still inside the "C" which indicates the mark was applied before the paint. The UK expert's conclusion "it has marks which may or may not be spurious." CONCLUSION: No one can say with any certainty the origin of this knife so what I have done is reduce its price from $695.00 to $300.00 and classify it as Post War, Ca 1960. For someone willing to gamble, here's a chance to acquire an F-S 3rd Pattern knife with Canadian issue cartouche, Ca 1960, for a great deal less than the value of an authenticated WW II example. You will be able to tell your friends that you may have gotten a real bargain. Back and front of scabbard has a Broad Arrow cartouche stamped at top. It dates the same as the knife. Ca 1960. Note black paint inside Canadian mark on ferrule. MARKINGS: This example is marked, on four lines, with William Rodgers, Sheffield, England and a Broad Arrow in side a "C" on each side of the ferrule which identifies it as being issued to the Canadian Forces. There is black paint inside of one of the “C“ markings indicating that the chipping occurred after the paint was applied. THE SCABBARD: of the 3rd Pattern design is of leather with an elastic band at the top to secure the hilt, and brass tipped at the bottom, and secured by a brass rivet. In later examples there are two leather tabs or wings protruding from the sides, four total. They were used to sew the scabbard to clothes. This scabbard, which is of an early type design made without the tabs is thought to be original to this particular knife and Ca 1960. The stitching is tight and the leather is supple. It is Stamped with Broad Arrow cartouche front and back. SPECIAL MARKINGS on PATTERN 3: Knives used by Canadian forces are marked with the broad arrow within C Australian knives are marked with a broad arrow inside capital letter D or one D on each side of the arrow. Everything is tight and it is free of rust and imperfections. There is a broad arrow in side a "C" on each side of the ferule. It has the original 3rd Pattern zinc aluminum alloy hilt with 27 rings. It is in overall excellent condition baring some paint loss and minor scratches on the blade. The scabbard has a Broad Arrow stamp on both sides.
