Antique US NAVY
Foredeck Bell
Ca 1900

Ca 1899

Presented is a very early “foredeck” or “anchor watch” bell which
we date to the Turn of the 20th Century. It is very similar to the one that we sold to the main U.S. Military Command in Thailand
last year. It has been brightly polished and lacquered, is in pristine condition, and suitable for a retirement gift, presentation,
or Naval ceremonies. It comes with the rarely found “shoe” in which the hanging bracket fits that are typically left with
the ship. The original clapper has a seaman like fancy bell rope attached adds a perfect touch. The two ribbed bands at
the top of the bell circumscribing the crown and the two bands at around the mouth of the bell dates it from the Turn
of the 20th Century or earlier.

                       An
impressive gift or ceremonial bell
The molded in place USN marks it as an original and not an engraved copy. Bells of this unique
design are very scarce, and those that have their mounting shoe and bracket are scarcer still. The vertical bracket
allows them only to be mounted on a pedestal or deck, hence they are known as anchor or foredeck bells.
This example has been mounted on an oval wood stand
for display which is included along with a proper white macramé bell rope.
The tone of a proper Navy bell, made using a special “bell metal” formula is exceptional.
It has a strong resonance that once heard will never be forgotten. Do not expect cheap imitations to have this distinctive
ring because “bell metal” is a specially formulated bronze alloy, unique to the Navy for this highly specialized use.
