JOSEPH LUCAS' THOMAS BOWLING LAMP WORKS CABIN LAMP
From the Family Estate of Fleet Admiral, Sir James Hawkins-Whitshed, RN, KCB, GCB

From the family estate of Fleet Admiral, Sir James Hawkins Whitshed, RN, GCB, (1762-1849). The Fleet Admiral is Britain's highest ranking naval officer.

Presented is an extremely rare Joseph Lucas Tom Bowling Lamp Works black steel cabin lamp. The Lamp Works gave birth to the Lucas Electric empire, and these lamps were the first products. The lamp was repainted about ten years ago in its original color. Over the course of the last 135 years, Its burner, which appears to be original, has been repaired by brazing.

The Thomas Bowling lamp is often heard of, sometimes written about, but rarely seen. This is likely the first TBLW lamp that has been offered for sale in the U.S. in some time. One recent sale was of a railroad lamp by the same maker which sold on April 5, 2005 at a Bonham's Auction in the U.K. for 1380 GBP or approximately $2600.00.

DIMENSIONS: Counting the bail, the lamp is 19 inches high, and 11 1/2 inched from guard to guard in diameter. The bail is 3". The globe is 8 inches in diameter. Made from steel or iron. Weight is 4 pounds.

This wonderful piece is a historic example of  a ship's cabin and cargo light  as conceived by Jospeh Lucas starting in 1870. Lucas famous Lucas ElectricCompany was born from these humble beginnings. The lamp, complete with original burner adds a touch of old world charm.

The item is guaranteed authentic with known provenance and comes from the heir to his estate.

BIOGRAPHICAL NOTE: Sir James Hawkins was born in 1762, joined the British Navy, and in 1773 was entered on the books of the Ranger sloop and then on the Irish station. He served on the Newfoundland and North American stations and was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant on September 4, 1778. Whitshed studied for three years at Oxford, attended lectures on astronomy and traveled the continent, mainly Denmark and Russia. In 1791 he assumed the last name of Whitshed, the surname of his maternal grandmother, in accordance with the terms of a cousin’s will.

Whitshed took part in many naval battles and received many honors and promotions. On July 31, 1810, he was promoted to the rank of admiral, and was appointed as commander-in-chief at Portsmouth from January 1821 to April 1824. He was also made a G.C.B. (a British order of chivalry) in November 1830, a baronet in May 1834, baron of the kingdom of Hanover in 1843, and Admiral of the fleet in January 1844.

Whitshed married Sophia Henriett Bentinck in 1791, and they had two sons and four daughters. The eldest son was killed in 1813 while he was a midshipman of the Berwick. His second son, St. Vincent Keene, who succeeded to the baronetcy, died in 1870; and on the death of the second baronet’s only surviving son the following year, the baronetcy became extinct.

Whitshed died at his house in Cavnedish Square, London, on October 28, 1849.
