GIANT VINTAGE POLISHED BRASS SKYLIGHT BINNACLEG

With ORIGINAL SPHERICAL COMPASS PRESENTED is a giant size skylight or cathedral binnacle by BERGEN-NAUTIK of Norway. This company was one of the finest makers of high end nautical compasses and binnacles during the 20th century. The gimbaled compass, which functions normally, was once filled with liquid which has been drained. The binnacle has been mounted on a mahogany base and has been electrified. Although we would not recommend it for use at sea without being serviced by a professional, it will make an outstanding and impressive addition to any decor, den or office.

Compass: 6″ dial – 10 degree increments – two lubber marks etched in compass wall at 90 degrees

Binnacles such as these became very popular starting in the 1920’s. Their popularity may have increased after one was seen aboard the motor vessel “Santana” in the movie “Key Largo” (1948) with Humphrey Bogart and Lauren Bacall. Bogie also had one in the cockpit of his famous yaw,l Santana. Here it is shown covered with a chrome hood. The one being offered in this listing is the largest we’ve ever seen or heard of in a binnacle of this type. One of these fine binnacles was also recently pictured with JF Kennedy sailing aboard Yacht Manitou while he was President of the United States. PROVENANCE: Acquired in the normal course of business. Unaware of the previous owner.
CONDITION: This binnacle is in like new condition with the compass working properly. The binnacle was professionally polished and lacquered.. The compass is being sold for display. Its fluid has been removed to preserve the card, and it is not intended to be used at sea in this condition.
