BEAUTIFUL VICTORIAN STYLE SKYLIGHT BINNACLE

PRESENTED is a very unusual style Skylight or Cathedral Binnacle on a very decorative black cast iron stand. Neither the binnacle casing or the compass has any maker’s mark, so we don’t know where it originated, but think the style puts in at the turn of the 20th century. It’s a very dramatic piece, adding a stunning nautical touch to any decor.Overall Height: 38″
Estimated Weight: 32 Lbs Width at Base of Stand: 16″
Height of Stand without Binnacle: 25″
Binnacle Height. : 14″                         Width: 8 ½”
Compass Width: Gimbal 4 3/4″        Compass: 4″         Compass Card: 2 ¾”

Skylight or Cathedral Binnacles were very popular throughout the 20th Century. They were common on fine yachts and in the early periods, aboard ships. They continue to be highly sought after, and we’ve sold many over the years. The demand is such, that when we do get them, we don’t have them for very long.

Humphrey Bogart and Lauren Bacall aboard their Yacht “Santana, in 1948showing their Skylight binnacle.
CONDITION:This fine and very decorative binnacle is in excellent condition. The brass has been polished and lacquered for dramatic display. There is a bubble within the compass itself, but the compass is working properly. The gimballed compass can ride steadily providing it is in a stable environment. This would not be suitable for ship board use.
