BRITISH ROYAL NAVY
BICORN HAT AND CARRIER
Bicorn
Cocked Hat and Case
Made by O & J Jolliffe Size 7/8 Case 19″ L x 8 1/4″ H x 8″ W
Presented is a British Royal Navy, full dress, bicorn hat or chapeau. The bicorn hat comes with a Victorian style tin case with the brass name plate of R. Ide, R.N. The hat was made by O & J Jolliffe, 32 Tavistock St., Devonport, UK. Devonport is part of Plymouth, England with a very extensive and long naval history. Uniforms of this quality from any outfitter, and owned by a named Royal Navy officer are rare. They are wonderful display items, and similar to the Royal Navy Uniforms that date back to Lord Horatio Nelson, as is shown in the print near the bottom of this page. They serve to establish a historic connection with the past as shown by this lithograph of British Royal Navy Uniforms dated 1834. It’s great to find this surviving example of a lieutenants uniform of this style is in its original case and in good condition.

The hat is in good condition and the wear shows that it was in regular use. The silk lining is frayed and quite delicate. The suede inner lining shows wear. The named case is of tin construction with the Brass name plate of R. Jole, R.N. It shows some minor surface oxidation. We were unable to locate a British Naval office with this name.
