Elegant Small Bronze Cannon Model dated 1850
with Bone Wheels
Presented is a truly elegant small bronze barreled signal cannon that
follows the design of the famous Dahlgren guns used on Civil War warships. The cannon has a discernable date on the barrel of 1850. The interesting wood platform holding the cannon could have been used shipboard or been a land-based installation. The Dahlgren’s came in various sizes, and one of the most popular was the 11-inch, 32-pound, muzzel-loading smooth bore of Civil War vintage. They were
used as both field guns and aboard ships.
Dimensions: Barrel: 5 3/4″ Muzzel: 1/4″ Diameter of firing hole: 4 3/4″ Wt: 1 lb. 11 oz.
Cannons on a ship’s carriage are increasingly
rare finds. They were used ashore and afloat to make salutes, announce a danger, and call attention in an emergency.
View of carriage with barrel tilted forward and hinged firing hole
The cannon has an unusual hinged firing apparatus over the cannon’s firing hole, which we have never seen before. We are unsure whether this has been a firing cannon, although there appears to be soot inside the cannon firing pin. The cannon’s carriage wheels appear to be bone.
