This fine poster, ” They Kept the Sea Lanes Open / Invest in the Victory Liberty Loan,” by L.A. Shafer, 1918-1919, was in support of the Navy’s efforts to keep the oceans and seas open and safe f to send American troops and transportation ships with supplies to Europe. In the North Atlantic, German U-boats were patrolling and succeeding in disrupting and sometimes sinking ships in the convoys. This poster and ones like it were an appeal to the American public to invest in our safety. It features an American submarine, destroyer, and cargo ship.
The poster is in excellent condition. It has been stored flat between heavy poster boards.
