Back view

John Bellamy set a standard for creating some of the most beautiful eagle carvings for ships and general display in his day.  Many contemporary carvers have adopted styles after Bellamy for their classic beauty.

Carver’s Identification and Date

The most famous American nautical woodcarver was John Haley Bellamy.  He worked out of Kittery, Maine, in the 1860s and 1870s. Bellamy made his living by carving eagles for ships and the home. The beautiful lines and style of his eagles were very much in demand, and many fine carvers in recent decades have copied his style.
