Maritime Radio Room Clock
by Chelsea

This fine clock is in excellent condition, with the face and hands showing as new. This is an 11 jewel, 8 day movement, although we find that it runs for almost two weeks on a single wind. For best time keeping, it is best to wind these clocks once a week.As is the usual presentation with the Chelsea phenolick cases, the Serial number has been engraved on the backplate. This fine 50 years old clock has been recently serviced, and the movement is keeping excellent time.

It is housed in a black phenolic case with a silver clock face and clear black numbering showing both 12 and 24-hour numbering and marking the “Silent Periods” in red and green. The winding arbor is just above the 6-hour mark. It is in pristine condition. Metal shortages and scarcity during the war mandated that the clocks for the military during this period switched from the bronze & brass cases to phenolic. As it has remained a popular housing with the military and general public, Chelsea continues to produce clocks in these durable cases.

History of the Radio Room Clocks: Following the sinking of the Titanic, U.S. Congress passed the Radio Act of 1912. This, along with successive regulatory acts, mandated 24-hour radio watches for all coastal stations and vessels at sea. It also designated three-minute “silent periods” for voice and radio transmissions where only safety and emergency signals were permitted. Radio designs such as this naval time clock made it easier to observe the silent periods.
This clock will make a suitable gift or is worthy of inclusion in a collection of fine marine clocks.
