MODEL 1841 MEXICAN WAR SMOOTH BORE – SIGNAL CANNON –

Mexican War, Indian Wars, Civil War

Presented is a finely cast miniature of a Mid 19th
Century bronze signal cannon with reinforced chamber. It’s design and proportions identify it as a reduced size Model 1841
six pounder that was prominently used during the Mexican War period, 1846-1848, and carried forward into the Civil War.
The casting obviously languished for years, and acquired a nice patina of age and verdigris.

CONDITION: The cannon appears to be cast in one piece
with the trunnions in the center of the tube. The bore is drilled 4 3/4″. There are no mold marks or inscriptions.
DIMENSIONS:
Cannon Length overall 9″
Length barrel 7 3/4″ Bore 1/2″
Width at aft ring 1 3/4″ Width at front ring 1″
Weight of cannon 3 lbs

This fine example of a Model 1841 salute cannon is being sold for
display purposes only, and no attempt should be made to fire it.

MODEL
1841 CANNON:
This design shows the last vestiges of the highly decorated artillery pieces that prevailed until the
beginning of the 19 Century: breech band, cascabal fillet, fillet and roundel at the throat, and an echinus on the muzzle
face were also features of the M1841 12-pounder. All were discontinued on the Model 1857 Napoleon that replaced the 6 and
12 pounders as the smooth bore of choice during the Civil War. Attempts to convert some of these guns to rifles, using the
James system of rifling, had only limited success.
