Presented is a rugged vintage binnacle
with handsome bronze hood, single oil burner and two very large quadrantal correctors. The helmet style hood
has a round center port with a single oil lamp to starboard. Arms on either side hold twin iron balls for adjusting
deviation. Mounted in back is what some call a cylindrical chart case, but it really was used to house a magnetic Flinders
bar. The hood has a nice patina which enhances its good looks. The compass card is marked Bergan, Norway,
Type 10, SN 71264. Etched on the glass is the date it was last serviced, 6/12/71. The tag that’s on the trunk is
from W. Hartmann, Nautische Instrumente, Hamburg, Germany. Missing is a maker’s tag that
mounted on the front approximate center, and a small rheostat on the lower left side. It is otherwise complete, in good condition
and recently varnished.
DIMENSIONS:
Overall height 52″
Maximum width 32″
Compass bowl 9″ diameter
Compass card 6 1/2″ diameter
CONDITION: There are some minor dents and abrasions
as would be expected from its use at sea. The compass works as it should and all parts are present. Considering its years
of service, its overall condition is excellent.
