INDIAN CLASS RACING SLOOP PLAQUE
By John G. Alden

Presented is a builder’s model of a centerboard racing sloop named “TUSCARORA“ after the
Indian Tribe which is engraved on a presentation plate on the plaque. Other than coming from Marblehead, MA, nothing is
known of the model’s origin except that the yacht designer, John Alden designed and built 100 of these smart
looking, 21 foot, craft starting in 1924. He named them “INDIAN CLASS”. Some of them are still sailing today. The
black painted hull over a green bottom is lapstrake built with the sales carved from Pine all mounted on a Mahogany backboard.
The varnish has acquired a warm mellow tone over the intervening 85 years.

The hull shows a pleasing shape
that is designed to move swiftly through the water.

Presentation models were
often used as awards given to race winners or to celebrate the launch of a specific boat
