Early French Hunting Sword Ca 1760 Museum Owned

Presented is an early hunting sword with a finely
made leather covered hilt that is wrapped with two strands of braided copper wire, all of which is in near perfect condition
with everything tight. This hilt design was popular in early America from about 1650 to 1800, and in Europe,
and England during the same period. The polished iron blade has an ornate crest design running 3 1/4 inches from the blade
end to the full width comprised of intricate scrolls and other marks that are repeated on both sides. On the obverse to the
right of this, is a hunting dog chasing a fox, and on the reverse, the dog is chasing a stag. Both edges of the double
edge blade are razor sharp.
There are no maker’s markings or a scabbard.

MUSEUM MARKINGS: On the crossguard penned in ink is written E.36.85.13.
This number was assigned by the museum which recently sold the sword to benefit their “Collections Fund”. The small white
tag on the hilt repeats this information with H93 and leather hilt on the reverse. This is a tough call, but we think the
hilt is made of wood. There are no other markings.
