PRESENTED is a model of a harbor tug
identified as “K“. It is built primarily from wood and other materials with a lift off cabin and forward hatch. The
K is fitted with an electric motor and drive train for battery power, and is finished in three colors of enamel, a red
bottom, off white deck house and Robin egg blue on the hull and lower cabin sides .
This model’s hull is built using plank over rib construction with
the deck and deck house made from thin wood sheets. All the hardware and fittings are individually hand made in
wood and metal with two life rings made from resin. Inside the pilothouse is a wheel, engine telegraph and other bridge fittings.
Alfred S. Hellier, the model’s maker, was a noted North Carolina
model ship builder whose work was ranged from very small scale models of known ships to much larger scale models
which are smaller in size. Most were engine powered. He died at an early age, making his work highly collectible.
